Our Maryland Blue Crab

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

blue crab dishes at CVPThere are a lot of traditions when it comes to living in Baltimore. Residents of Baltimore take pride in their heritage and traditions and there’s no doubt everyone will enjoy a summer tradition in the upcoming months; eating steamed crabs. The people of Baltimore love to feast on the state’s official crustacean, but how much do we really know about the Maryland Blue Crab?

The Maryland Blue Crab, scientific name as Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, was discovered in 1896 by scientist Mary Jane Rathbun. It was declared the official State Crustacean in 1989. Coincidentally, its scientific name translates to “beautiful swimmer that is savory”, which many residents can vouch that it is, indeed, savory. The average life span of a Maryland Blue Crab as of October 2000 is about 2 to 3 years. Blue crabs are believed to have a life span of about 8 years, but harvesting and the conditions of the Chesapeake Bay prevent them from living that long. Blue crab harvesting takes place at different times of the day during different months of the year. For full crabbing regulations, click here.

In Crisfield, Somerset County, there is a National Hard Crab Derby and Fair that takes place every Labor Day weekend. The fair includes a crab feast, cooking contests, and a crab picking contest. Out of town guests who enter through Baltimore-Washington International Airport can see the state’s pride by the stained-glass blue crab on display on the upper level.

When you visit Charles Village Pub & Patio, you can expect the pride of the Maryland Blue Crab to live in our menu. We incorporate this state tradition with items like:

  1. Bay Burger- One of our delicious burgers topped with imperial sauce, cheddar cheese, and a mini jumbo lump crab cake.
  2. Chicken Chesapeake- Stacked on top of a brioche roll you will find grilled chicken, crab cake, imperial sauce, lettuce, and tomato.
  3. The Waterman Club- A classic club styled sandwich with shrimp salad and a jumbo lump crab cake.

To enjoy a part of Maryland’s history, stop in today to enjoy one of our crab favorites! Conveniently located in the heart of Towson, CVP is open daily with hours from 11am to 2am; our kitchen is constantly pumping out delicious crab entrees to suit every Baltimore residents’ crab cravings.

Towson Destination for Orioles Games

Monday, April 21st, 2014

Towson Baltimore OriolesIf you’re a Baltimore Orioles fan, there’s no doubt that you’re excited about the win over the Boston Redsox today. If you watched the game from home or work, though, you missed out on the opportunity to pair some great beer and food with your O’s game (c’mon, you gotta have Boh’s with your O’s). At CVP, we offer great deals for every Orioles game. Come sit down and enjoy our outdoor seating on a nice spring day or watch the game on one of our big screen TVs in the bar. You won’t want to miss a good game with good beer. So now, the important question, what’s on special?

Drinks
Buy your baseball buddies cheap rounds with $2.00 Miller Lite and Coors Lite bottles, $4.00 Bacardi “O” drinks, or $4.00 O’s Bombs. Remember, though, you can only get these specials during the game. Don’t let the last inning sneak up on you without taking advantage of these awesome drink specials. Plus, if the next round is on you, you can save some cash by buying a $9.00 bucket of five beers. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Food
Where’s the fun in drinking and watching the game if you can’t snack, too? Nowhere, that’s where. Try one of our best deals by getting a pitcher of Yuengling, Miller Lite, or Coors Lite paired with your choice of wings (Old Bay’s the way to go for Maryland sports) for $17.99. You can also grab half a pound or a pound of steamed shrimp at a special market price or get the real feel of the game by woofing down a ball park hotdog. There’s nothing quite like feeling the authenticity of a O’s game while hanging out comfortably inside your favorite Towson bar.

Don’t fret. You can get all other menu items during the games, too, but these specials are some of the best deals around during O’s games. To see a schedule of the Oriole’s upcoming games, click here.

Where Can I get Late Night Bar Food in Towson?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

Late night menu towsonAfter a fun night of hanging out with friends, dancing, and knocking back some drinks, nothing sounds better than a big plate of fries smothered in bacon and cheese, but where you can you go that still serves good bar food at 1 in the morning? CVP of course! We understand that some nights just require good bar food with the last few drinks of the night, and we want to make sure that you’re getting the best bar food you can find. We even have a full late night menu available for those of you that need a late night foodie fix. Check out some of the best deals on the menu!

  • Nachos mountain – When you and your friends come to CVP for some late night food, nothing says wrapping up a good night like a heaping plate of nachos. Our nachos are smothered in montery cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream and boasts salsa on the side. Plus, you can add some chicken or chili for a little extra. This is some great shareable bar food.
  • Sliders – When you don’t want a whole burger, but you want lots of mini burgers. These awesome little concoctions come in quantities of 3, 6, or 12 mini burgers so you can have plenty of cheesy burgery goodness to share (or plenty to NOT share).
  • Fries – We’ve got fries lots of different ways. You don’t have to settle for plain old fries with salt on them. We’ve got O.C. fries that are tossed in salt and apple cider vinegar for a taste of the beach, bacon cheddar cheese fries for those who just can’t get enough toppings for their fry craving, and a big basket of plain fries for those with simply fry tastes.
  • Buffalo wings – We’ll end this highlighted list with one of the most classic bar foods of all times – hot wings. Get 10 wings in your choice of CVP sauces (or Old Bay mmmm) to satisfy your late night craving. Pair some Old Bay wings with a Bohtini, and you’re all ready for summer in Baltimore.

When you get a late night food craving, CVP is the place to be. Enjoy our late night menu with a cold beer to top it all off and end your Towson night the right way.

What Can I Drink If I Have A Gluten Allergy?

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

Friends at Bar

The Baltimore Orioles are taking on the New York Yankees today in what is sure to be an exciting game. And if you’re looking for a place to grab a beer and watch the game, CVP Towson is the place for you. But, what can you drink if you have a gluten allergy, are gluten-intolerant, or are just on a gluten free diet? Many foods and beverages contain gluten, including some alcoholic drinks.

What is Gluten?

Gluten refers to proteins found in wheat and certain grains. So, as you can imagine, gluten is found in most beers. For those of us who are gluten-intolerant, meaning our bodies produce an abnormal immune response when breaking down gluten, this can often make it difficult to out and enjoy a drink with friends. Fortunately, there are plenty of liquors and beers that are now gluten free. You just have to know what to look for!

What Can I Drink If I Have A Gluten Allergy?

  1. While most beers are not gluten free (beers made with hops and barley are off limits. Period.), several brewers have started creating gluten-free options. Just be sure to check the label!
  2. Another great option for the gluten-intolerant is hard cider, such as Angry Orchard and Woodchuck. Because these drinks are fermented from fruit, they rarely contain wheat gluten.
  3. Wine is also a gluten free option, because it is made from grapes. As if you needed another reason to love wine!
  4. Champagne and sparkling wines are also made from grapes and gluten-free.
  5. Finally, most hard liquors are safe, even the ones distilled from gluten grains. This is because the distillation process removes all of the gluten protein molecules responsible for your allergic reactions. In fact, the National Institutes of Health’s Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign states that all distilled alcohol is gluten-free, regardless of its original source.

CVP Towson offers several gluten free options. Just ask your bartender!

Natty Boh – A Baltimore Legend

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

Young man holding up glass of beer in bar, smiling, portraitFind any bar in the greater Baltimore area and you’re almost guaranteed to find Natural Bohemian on draft. Known to Baltimore natives as “Natty Boh,” this beer has become the true flavor of Baltimore sports (see Boh’s and O’s) and nights out on the town. What you may not know, though, is that Natty Boh is no longer brewed in Baltimore, but is now brewed by Pabst Blue Ribbon. If you’re new to the Baltimore bar scene, you may also not know that the beer was taken off tap back in 1996, when the native Stroh Brewery Company closed down and forced production to move to Pabst Blue Ribbon. Luckily they continued to produce the beer rather than discontinue it.

Then in 2004, Natty Boh began to make a comeback due to its good price and Baltimore’s love for all things created in Baltimore. 90% of Pabst’s sales of Natty Boh were being made to the Baltimore area, anyway, so it seemed only fitting for Baltimore to get it back in some way. After Pabst was bought out by a company in Connecticut in 2011, the company decided that they should do a revival of the old Baltimore favorite back in its hometown. It’s first day back on tap in Baltimore, Natty Boh sold over 300 kegs to 80 area bars in Carroll, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel counties, as well as Baltimore city. It’s clear that Baltimore wanted it’s beer back. Ever since then, business has been booming for Natty Boh. The monocled man can be seen on billboards in the area, tourist gear, and more. You can even order a Bohtini which features another Maryland classic – an Old Bay rimmed glass of Natty Boh. It literally does not get more Baltimore than that. Thankfully, Natty Boh is still on tap 3 years later and will hopefully stay that way for years to come. We’re glad to have you back, Mr. Boh!
