Happy Piña Colada Day from CVP Towson

pina colada daySummer is characterized by cold drinks, baseball, and crabs here in Maryland. Frozen drinks are one of the best options when it comes to 100+ degree days, though, and what better frozen drink to sip on than the piña colada? The pineapple, coconut, whipped cream flavor combination is refreshing and intoxicating (literally, if you add some rum). Did you know that July 10 is National Piña Colada Day here in the States? If you ever needed an excuse to drink a piña colada or two, today is the perfect day for it.

History of the piña colada
As with just about any food or alcoholic beverage, the roots of this frozen concoction have been debated for years, but the oldest tale goes all the way back to a pirate (surprise, surprise). Supposedly the Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí was the first to introduce piña coladas to the world. In order to boost morale among his crew, he decided to serve them drinks with the supplies that were readily available: coconut, pineapple juice, and white rum. From there, the drink became incredibly popular and became the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978. Now, on to the fun part.

Piña Colada Recipes

  • Strawberry Soda Colada

o   1 ½ parts strawberry colada

o   1 ½ parts pineapple juice

o   Club soda

o   Mix strawberry colada liquor and pineapple juice together. Top with club soda and garnish with pineapple and a cherry. It’s a twist on the original, but you still get the classic piña colada taste undercurrent.

  • Classic Frozen Piña Colada

o   ½ cup white rum

o   ½ cup coconut cream

o   ½ cup coconut milk

o   ¼ cup pineapple chunks

o   Pineapple slices for garnish

o   Maraschino Cherries for garnish

o   Whipped cream for garnish

o   You’ll need a blender to get the frozen colada feel. Fill the blender up halfway with ice. Add the first 4 ingredients and blend, preferably on puree speed. Pour into glasses and garnish with pineapple, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. Mmmm.

  • Banana Colada

o   ½ part banana

o   2 parts coconut rum

o   2 parts pineapple juice

o   2 parts coconut milk

o   2 tspn coconut cream

o   Mix all ingredients in shaker over ice, shake well, and serve. Use strawberries, pineapple slices, or bananas for garnish.
